Building Guide

Visual guide to placing settlements, cities, and roads on the hex board.

Board Layout

The game board is made up of hexagonal tiles, each representing a different terrain type that produces a specific resource. Each hex has a number token in its centre — when that number is rolled, the hex produces resources for adjacent buildings.

Basic Board Layout 6 Forest 8 Hills 5 Fields 10 Pasture Forest (lumber) Hills (brick) Fields (wheat) Pasture (wool)

Placing Settlements and Cities

Settlements are placed at intersections — the points where two or three hex tiles meet (vertices of the hexagons). A settlement earns 1 Victory Point and collects resources from each adjacent hex when its number is rolled.

A city is an upgraded settlement. It occupies the same intersection but earns 2 Victory Points and collects double resources. You must already have a settlement at an intersection before you can upgrade it to a city.

Placing Roads

Roads are placed along the edges of hex tiles, connecting two adjacent intersections. Roads belong to a single player and are used to expand your network across the board.

Distance Rule: When placing a new settlement, it must be at least two road segments away from any other settlement or city. This means there must be at least one empty intersection between any two buildings.

Building Example

Below is an example of a single player's buildings on the board. The Red player has a city (upgraded from a settlement) connected by two road segments to a settlement. This is a typical early-game layout.

Summary

Building Placed On Victory Points Notes

Settlement Hex vertex (intersection) 1 Must obey distance rule
City Hex vertex (intersection) 2 Replaces a settlement
